29th Annual Mark Belling Cruise - Mediterranean Perfection
Can a cruise be perfect? Can it have it ALL? This is my 29th annual WISN Listener Cruise and I can say we have never been closer to perfection with a cruise vacation than my 2020 cruise. I guess that’s appropriate: 20-20 vision is supposed to be close to perfect so my June 2020 cruise has to live up to the number. We’ve done it.
My cruise promotions have been about four things: spectacular cruise ships, incredible itineraries, tremendous service and amazing “extra” events. The service from my partners and friends at Cruise & Tour is a given. But what about the other three? Once again, I’ll use the word perfect or “savrsen.” That’s how you say “perfect” in Croatian because we are going to one of the hottest vacation destinations on the planet right now—the incredible Dalmatian Coast. Located on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, this is one of the most beautiful and iconic shorelines in the world. The lush and mountainous seaside and bustling coastal ports create a destination to die for. We will stop in Trieste in Italy, Kotor in Montenegro and Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia. That sounds “teleios.” That’s how you say perfect in Greek which is appropriate because we will also be stopping in Corfu off Greece’s western coast. But the beauty and fun don’t stop when we leave the Adriatic for the Mediterranean. We will stop in Sicily, the incredible island south of the Italian mainland. From there, we head to another iconic shoreline, the majestic and glamorous Amalfi Coast and the famed Italian seaside port of Naples. We will begin and end our cruise in the Eternal City of Rome. There may be no more fascinating or historic city in the world. Perfetto! (“Perfect” in Italian)
But this incredible destination with all of its beauty and splendor isn’t enough to make a cruise perfect. All cruisers know the cruise ship is a destination in and of itself. And my 2020 cruise will be on one of the most talked-about new ships in the history of cruising. The Celebrity Edge, which debuted in late 2018, has been the buzz of the travel industry even before it ever set sail. This ship redefines the cruising experience and offers amenities, experiences and accommodations no land-based resort in the world can match.
Perfect is a pretty high standard to aim at. But this cruise has it all—an astonishing cruise ship, a stunning itinerary and the unique service and special events that have made my listener cruise the most successful promotion of any kind in Milwaukee radio history. Sounds savrsen, I’d say.

The walled city of Kotor (pictured above) offers up some of the most well-preserved architecture in all of the Adriatic coast, with landmarks such as the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town is filled with churches, shops, restaurants and hidden piazzas (perfect for enjoying a nice glass of Montenegrin wine). Marbled avenues meander with no apparent order. Fresh seafood is always on the menu and the “traditional fish thick soup” is a tradition not to be missed. Come summer, the lavish yachts of the ultra-rich fill the marina, presenting a striking contrast to the rustic romance and ancient beauty.
Trieste, Italy

Trieste, Italy
The Old World city of Trieste occupies a northeastern Italian crossroads of Latin, Slavic and Germanic cultures on the Adriatic Sea. The reign of the Austrian House of Hapsburg accounts for gastronomy featuring beer, sauerkraut and strudel. The many cultures can be sampled in cozy coffeehouses and seafood restaurants, as well as breezy plazas, Old World churches and prolific museums. Must-see attractions include Piazza Unità d’Italia, Risiera di San Sabba and Civico Museo Sartorio.
Split, Croatia
Lined with palm trees, this Adriatic seaside town is also a cultural mecca. In Split’s Old Town, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll encounter the most imposing Roman ruins left on Earth, including Diocletian’s Palace which was built facing the harbor in 4 AD for the Roman Emperor. Within the walls of the palace, you’ll discover historical buildings, numerous museums, the National Theatre and a collection of old churches. The Cathedral of St. Domnius stands as one of the most pristine examples of ancient Roman architecture in the world.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Established 1,300 years ago on the far southern tip of the Dalmatian Coast, this walled city once rivaled Venice in terms of importance. Dubrovnik has had many invaders including the Greeks, Romans, Slavs, Hungarians and French, and it has resulted in a fiercely independent citizenry with dynamic cultural influences. If seafood is your thing, there’s plenty of it, prepared in authentic regional styles. And the view from the rooftop restaurants of the Adriatic’s emerald green water – awe-inspiring.
Corfu, Greece
According to myth, Poseidon honeymooned on this picturesque Greek island, and it’s easy to see why. Its breathtaking natural landscape and long history as an artistic and cultural hub make Corfu one of the most cosmopolitan and captivating of the Greek Isles. Wander through the maze-like cobblestone streets of Old Town, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, or soak up some sun on one of the island’s many beaches.
Cruising
Sicily (Messina), Italy
Located in northeastern Sicily on the slopes of the Peloritani, Messina is an ancient place with a fascinating history. Walk by the ruins of the Santa Maria Alemanna church, built in 1220 AD. You’ll also want to see the Duomo di Messina, a Romanesque and Norman cathedral that includes a display of artifacts in its treasury.
Naples, Italy
For all of Rome’s notoriety and reputation, Naples, yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site, has just as many important archeological sites and landmarks. Framed by Mount Vesuvius along a dramatic skyline, the 2,800 year- old port city is chock full of historical sites, churches and museums. And in the region where pizza was first invented, you know the food is going to be incredible. Only 35 miles down the coast, Salerno offers rich history and boasts a marvelous collection of parks, natural wonders and gorgeous views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Once the center of the Ancient World from which emperors ruled over nearly all of western civilization, Rome is still a cultural mecca. Only a few cities in the world can boast such a well-preserved level of architecture, art and religious iconography. Visit the ancient halls of the 50,000- seat Colosseum. Experience hearty bowls of fresh pasta, excellent cheeses, wines, and delightful desserts like tiramisu and gelato.
